St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, MN

After about six days in the hospital, due to her injuries at the end of the previous story, Rose has healed enough to wake. Without her glasses, all she can see are blurs, but can easily identify Lamprey as the one holding her hand, due to her cold touch, and places Caribou as the blur of brown shades.

After putting on her glasses, Rose notices an unnamed doctor entering, who then asks about her memories. The question sparks a distressing recollection of Steven Hedgeworth Sr.'s broadcast, before Lamprey and Caribou quickly calm her down.

Continuing on the topic of Steven Hedgeworth Sr, Caribou relates that during Rose's concovalence, the elder Steven Hedgeworth had arrived at Duluth to visit Rose, but actually recieved a restraining order and financial penalties for naming a victim, Rose, in a television broadcast.

After Rose has been caught up, the doctor provides a likely diagnosis for the incident that sent Rose to the hospital, a severe trauma-triggered Diedrick’s episode, and says that she's "mostly recovered, though the Uterus and ovaries are still mending, and might take a few more days.". He also recommends and offers to set up a meeting with a mental health specialist, before giving the patient some alone time with her visitors.

The number of people in the room decreases further, when Lamprey immediately requests, and recieves from Caribou, her own alone time with Rose, which Caribou spends somewhere outside. Lamprey spends her time apologizing to Rose, for her reaction to their kiss from the previous story, and explaining her personal revelation that she is a lesbian.

Whereupon Caribou knocks and returns to the room, bringing information about the end of visiting hours, and that Rose should expect the doctor's return in "a couple hours".

Lamprey leaves the room first, giving Caribou her own alone time with Rose, which spent relating how Lamprey was at Rose's bedside, holding her hand, daily, only leaving when the doctors would chase her out.

2007-10-03?[]

A couple days passed, and Rose was released from the hospital, with the understanding that she take it easy. Her reproductive system was almost fully healed, though she still felt some aches and pains on occasion.

At Glensheen Manor, Rose is reclining on the living room couch, with Lamprey reading a book and "sitting across from her on the matching love seat". After Rose accuses Lamprey of babysitting, and gets countered with some byplay about "the last time one of us thought that", Lamprey stops reading her book, and starts massaging Rose's feet.

Lamprey is clearly multitasking, so Rose asks what's up.

And recieves a love confession.

Whereupon Rose decides to let her down gently, since she thinks of herself as not-girlfriend material due to her vagaries of her mental state, from her Diedrick’s and her spirit.

Lamprey counters with acceptance of the person she fell in love with, and with that, Rose agrees to be a couple with Lamprey.

Rose then has further questions, wanting information on events that took place during her recovery, which Lamprey uses to reveal her MID Testing results, after which the couple stays on the couch until they fall asleep.

Which is how Caribou finds them after work, and smiles at the sight, before finding a blanket to cover them with, and making a call to allow Lamprey to spend the night at the manor.

2007-10-05[]

Rose had been out of the hospital for a couple days.

And is now "fully healed" and "was getting antsy", so she went for a run. Taking a new route, she found the Catholic Diocese, vandalized and graffitied with the biblical reference, "Leviticus 20:15".

She calls Transistor about this, who arrived "arrived in about five minutes". Whereupon Rose muses aloud about the meaning of the reference, and gets an answer from Father Theodore Andersen:

"If a man lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal.”

By that time, Caribou has also arrived, and informs the others that the graffiti is a sign of the Good Shepherds. She also gives Rose a look, telling her to go home. However, Rose gets some breakfast first, then heads home and showers.

When Caribou returns home "a few hours later", Rose has made her some tea, and asks for more information on what she encountered, which Caribou provides, that the Good Shepherds are an anti-"animal-like GSD" group, who had "phoned in to several local churches of various denominations about letting [them] attend services".

That mention of religion gets Rose musing about how she's hosting Inaba (Spirit), who does not like being called a "minor deity". Then moves onto the topic of ordering dinner, which was to be pizza, until Caribou noticed her phone with "several missed calls, all from her mother".

While her guardian went off to call in private, Rose mumbles about wanting Chinese food. When Caribou returns, she tells her charge that there's an family emergency at her reservation, that may take "several days", so Rose would be alone for that time, unless she went to the Duluth Superiors headquarters, where Transistor was.

After Caribou has left, Rose is on the couch, musing about going to her girlfriend's place and getting food from her family, but decided against it for serveral reasons, one of which being tiredness. When she finally makes a move, a delivery arrives for her, of Chinese food, clearly courtesy of Caribou and her Exemplar hearing.

That dinner ends with a fortune cookie, inside which contains a quote reputedly from Confucius, which is actually more of a reference to The Oak and the Reed of Aesop. The mention of Confucius causes Rose's spirit to note that they met before.

After dinner, Rose explores the mansion some more, before being tired out and going lying on her bed, when the phone rings with a call from Caribou, with information on the emergency:

something has been killing Shaman throughout Canada and the northern US. With Grandma and Mom both being Shaman, the tribal council called an emergency meeting

And also where Rose can stay if she doesn't want to be at the mansion:

I called Miguel and ‘Bel and filled them in. The Navarros have offered to let you stay over there if you get lonely, And Miguel said it’s fine if you want to stay with him.”

The latter offer is rejected, given the unfortunate events that occured in the HQ guest room over the last two parts, and that Caribou had unfortunately forgot until that reminder, and so, Rose has only the other two places to stay, instead. Once Caribou summarizes that, the call ends with pleasantries and Rose ends her day by sleeping on the couch.

2007-10-06[]

Morning came and Rose was still antsy

So her day starts similarly to the previous, except that she showers before running this time, unintentionally ending up at the Navarro house, where she's seen and invited in by Isobel Navarro.

After looking around the house for a bit, Rose is glomped and kissed by Lamprey, a sign that the Navarro parents know about their daughter getting a girlfriend. Isobel interrupts the affection, to speak to Rose alone, and reveals that both Rose and Isobel are both concerned about the possibility that the relationship with Rose and Lamprey ends poorly due to Rose's mental states.

Presumably seeing how saddened Rose is by that discussion, Isobel sends her daughter back in to cheer her up, while making a leave herself. Lamprey ends up returning with "her left hand suggestively licking what looked like a peeled grapefruit". After getting fed a piece, Rose lies in Lamprey's lap, until Isobel returns to inform the couple of her departure, and also tells them not to have sex. Which makes her daughter blush... hard.

When she recovered, Lia smiled and kissed Rose’s cheek, beginning the grapefruit feeding again.

And that leads to kissing, which gets more and more passionate, until Lamprey backs off, to keep to her mother's mandate, leading Rose to reveal that she wants their "first time together" to be special, given what her first time was like. That sets off Lamprey to blushing again, which causes Rose to appreciate the sight, before suggesting a "poke around town", instead of staying inside.

And so, Lamprey changes from her pajamas into a set of dark-themed clothing and accessories, which Rose appreciates even more. Stretching before their run, the couple checks each other out, before Lamprey uses a discussion on her lower Exemplar level to segue into kissing Rose for a distraction and gaining a head start.

The couple slowly runs to Glensheen Manor, where Lamprey is noticeably winded. Rose directs Lamprey to have a shower and use some of Caribou's clothes to change. Rose starts the laundry for the both of them, and has a shower as well. She finishes before Lamprey and ends up falling asleep on the couch, where Lamprey finds and wakes her up with a hand-tongue licking her cheek.

That reveals that Rose relaxing causes her to "twitch [her] nose like a bunny", leading Rose to blame that on her spirit. After which Lamprey would've kissed her, if not for that "the washer-dryer chose the most inopportune moment to buzz". After returning with the laundry, Rose's Diedrick's is making her horny, and she starts planning a date with Lamprey, keep her promise to herself, about their first time being special. And so they plan to go to the Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral dance on Saturday, October 13, 2007, which happens "every other Saturday".

2007-10-07-ish[]

The next few days went by rather uneventfully, As Lia and Rose ended up busily getting ready for the big date, long hours were spent at the sewing machines as Rose struggled to make both of them the perfect dresses. With her ability to judge sizes, she had figured out rather quickly what would fit her sexy girlfriend.

2007-10-09 A[]

Glensheen Manor in Duluth, MN

Rose yawned and sat at her sewing machine, listening to the radio. It was only October ninth, but an early blizzard had developed over the East Coast, and Whateley Academy was dead center in the middle of it. If this was going to be what the weather was like there, she had her doubts about attending. Sure, she had camped in the wilderness of Northern Minnesota, but she was also starting to get used to having a roof over her head, and a mansion to explore.

Whateley Academy's Crystal Hall

Ashleigh Amanda Hedgeworth is bored due to lacking any of her self-injuring hold-outs, that she doesn't seem to carry in class, and is against removing one of her own eyes, because her psychic powers depend on her eyes.

For lack of anything else to do, she's looking for the Richmond Twins, who her father encouraged her to target, and also reveals that they all knew each other before they mutated, and her envy of Tori Richmond in both how she appeals to boys, and how her brother lusted after her.

Upon spotting Tori, it's revealed that Ashleigh's power has a distance limitation, along with needing the target to be seen. However, Tori's brother, Downtrodden was both in sight and range, and so she dislocates her fingers to attack him. Upon seeing his attacker, he moves closer, so he can attack back with "his ability to create exhaustion and apathy in his targets", with Tori backing him up. The attack fails due to being braced for, and also because he was targetting a "regnerator five".

By this point, the combatants are in bantering range, whereupon it's revealed that James, the male Richmond Twin, somehow discovered that Steven Hedgeworth Sr. encouraged his daughter to attack them, as revenge for not being able to buy out Richmond Industries.

Ashleigh feigns ignorance, and Tori launches with an accusation that the senior Hedgeworth tried to kill the whole Richmond family with a car "accident". An accusation that gets Ashleigh to change her expression, such that Tori would have attacked further, without her brother holding her back. The twins communicate with a look, and decide to leave Ashleigh alone, with a warning that "slip up[s]" would lead to "regret".

Ashleigh just thinks about needing allies, since her brother was expelled, and decides to recruit Tiffany Cobb, who is "another annoying hot exemplar girl", but Ashleigh seems to know something about Tiffany that would make her cooperative, especially since she's "as dumb as a post".

She initiates her plan immediately, and the section ends with Ashleigh regretting that she didn't have more chances to attack the twins, but that "there would surely be time later to deal with them".

Glensheen Manor, Duluth, MN

The Shaman-killer emergency has been resolved by the defeat of the threat, and Caribou has returned home, in time to watch her charge being nervous for her first date with her girlfriend.

Caribou delivers Rose to the Navarro home, where the couple will set off for their date, and Lamprey keeps her date waiting, as is traditional, and reveals a surprise!

Mithril bracelets! Which were an old gift from her uncle Ricardo Navarro, and can serve as an anchor for a sleeping spell to "permanently solve [her] hungry hand issue”.

After some pictures, Caribou drives the happy couple to the "Fun in the sun dance" held at the Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, where they're greeted by Father Theodore Andersen.

They had a nice dance, with Lamprey showing a non-goth / tough-girl interest in the song, My heart will go on until a big commotion happened.

Meaning, that this is when the Good Shepherds attack, and as later revealed, also set the church on fire.

Rose starts to blame herself for their arrival, but shoves the thoughts aside for now, to work with Lamprey and deal with the attackers.

Thanks to the Good Shepherds' lack of planning, Rose and Lamprey's Exemplar natures, timely arrrival of the Duluth Superiors and emergency services, along with and a makeshift tourniquet from one of Lamprey's hand-tongues, all 31 Shepherds and everyone inside the church, survived the attack, and made it out before the building collapsed.

After the battle, Caribou drives the couple back to the manor and performs an after-action report:

Carrie looked at Rose and frowned. "You're stronger and more agile than Lia; you could have fought the intruders and left it to Lia and the chaperones to get everyone out! Tell me, what were you thinking?"
Lia shook her head and interrupted. "With all due respect, yes, she is stronger and faster than I am, Which is why she did the right thing. She can carry more people at once, and do it faster than I can. Additionally, while you may have given her some training in how to defend herself, I've had much more training on the streets... and I'm nastier, to boot!" With that Lia held up her hands, her palms red with blood, and her left hand still chewing something.
Caribou sighed, and then laughed. "Sensei Ito is going to love you."

Caribou takes the couple's statements, then leaves them at the mansion while she goes to talk with the authorities.

Meaning the couple is on the couch, alone.

Lamprey moves them to Rose's bedroom, before getting her undressed, and they shower together. Just showering, but both of them are feeling the moment, and Lamprey promises that the night is going to be special.

After showering, Lamprey discovers that Rose's tail, when handled right, is pleasantly sensitive, right before they share Rose's bed.

2007-10-14 A[]

Glensheen Manor, Duluth, MN

Rose wakes, with Lamprey spooning against her, and with her spirit still sleeping, who had been asleep since the church fire was extinguished.

Lamprey is then woken, due to her girlfriend wielding her GSD-granted fluffy tail, to attack some ticklish and "rather private places", since turnabout is fair play, before turning around and giving a kiss.

2007-10-14 B[]

St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, MN

While the couple in her home is having fun, Caribou is at the hospital and not having fun, being very aware of the condition of the church attack victims, especially the unnamed sheep-GSD girl who has no one with her at the moment, although a uncle is on his way.

She also talks with her friend, Doctor Paul Stevens, about his patients, Rose and Lamprey, and combat, who are following the same train of thought that Lamprey is, as revealed in the next section.

2007-10-14 C[]

Back at Glensheen Manor, Rose's spirit brings her host into dreamspace and comforts her over being an animal-GSD and target for the Good Shepherds:

You are suffering, and it’s not your fault. These people are evil. Don’t let them get to you. You are a gentle, kind soul that has a lot to give. Don’t let them tear you down because you don’t fit their narrow, bigoted ideal of ‘perfection’, you are beautiful inside and out, and don’t let anyone say otherwise.”

Upon leaving dreamspace, Lamprey offers comfort as well, along with noting how meek Rose is, which Rose connects to the idea of a rabbit, and her spirit takes the blame for it.

However, Lamprey has a solution, that takes place outside.

The couple gets change for a workout, with Lamprey's combat boots, indicating that her plan is combat training, which takes place "[over] the next hour and a half", after which they showered together, then Lamprey set up a daily plan to work out together and get Rose's flight instincts conquered.

Lia gave her sweetie a little peck on the cheek, and the two fell asleep in each other's arms on the couch.

2007-10-15?[]

Days passed and the girls would meet every day at the manor. A game of hide and seek formed between them, chasing each other over the grounds, and the adjacent parkland. Slowly, Rose gained self-confidence. She was stronger and she was learning to depend on herself. In the meantime, the girls also approached both the Archdiocese and the Superiors about a fundraiser for the church.
And so it came to pass that a fundraiser at the site of the collapsed cathedral was hastily arranged.

2007-10-26[]

Site of the former Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, in Duluth, MN

Isobel Navarro has taken a day off and tours the apparently hugely successful charity event initated by Lamprey and Rose, and talks with Caribou at the event, remarking on the latter's lack of antlers. It turns out that they were shed the previous day, and the regrowth stays unnoticable for about 2 days at most.

The pair wander the area, discovering some silver earrings that Caribou vicariously suggests Isobel wear, since, as a baseline, she doesn't need to worry about regeneration healing up the piercing holes. No trouble appears, before...

The day passed into evening, and then night came.

At that time, Rose, then Lamprey, arrive on stage to start the end of the fundraiser, with a closing speech advocating tolerance, and then Transistor also comes on stage, bearing a guitar, to back Lamprey while she sings Cat Steven's Peace Train, then backs Rose while she sings John Lennon's Imagine, and the audience's wish for an “Encore!” has them caps it all off with a duet from Rose and Lamprey, of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.

After the songs, the couple thanks the audience for their time and donations, before noting that "The fireworks will start in a few minutes."

The girls are recieved by their guardians, who express their pride, and Lamprey reflects on how her life has been changed for the better by her mutation.

After the fireworks concluded, Lia and Rose said their goodbyes with a little kissing

Then the quartret returned to their respective homes, where Rose can't sleep. She takes her blanket outside, notes her cold tolerance, and:

Walking to a remote corner of the property, Rose spread out the blanket before stripping off her nightgown. Looking up at the full Moon she sighed and lay there naked, basking in the moonlight.

2007-10-27 A[]

The next morning came and Rose stirred gently. It was chilly, and there was frost on the grass, and the dew that had collected on her body had frozen, but she didn’t feel cold.

When she returns inside, Caribou is having her morning coffee, but does notice enough to ask about Rose only being wrapped in a blanket.

It turns out that her spirit wanted to moonbathe, which made sense, given her connection to the Moon, "and last night it was at its fullest"

That segues into a warning about her possibly being seen, due to tresspassers on dares or ghost hunts. Inaba shudders at that last bit, apparently afraid of ghosts.

Rose showers because Lamprey is arriving later, and while toweling off she starts thinking of what she was like before her mutation.

Grabbing a grapefruit and some carrot juice, she sat on the back patio, wistfully looking at the trees of the wooded parkland that backed up to the property.
With her superb hearing, Rose heard [Lamprey] coming from quite a distance but she pretended she didn’t, as she looked sadly at the trees.

Lamprey turns "Penny for your thoughts” back on Rose, from the beginning of the story, and the answer is, that she misses the normal range of human color vision.

But, on seeing Lamprey, she finds delight in her enhanced range of blues, allowing her to appreciate Lamprey's eyes more.

They share a kiss, before starting their sparring session, where Rose performs well, due to basically having two teachers, Caribou and Lamprey.

The sparring session improptu ends with Lamprey basically winning. Rose is on the ground, and takes a hand up from Lamprey, to pull her into a kiss.

They share short sentences about the unexpected turns their lives have taken, then moves onto Halloween costumes, which Rose is making.

Rose has completed her own costume, and Lamprey weedles her into showing it. It's an "anime bunny-girl outfit", and Lamprey vocalizes how her lusty desires on seeing it, are only restrained by Caribou being in the area.

That leads to this ending exchange:

Rose laughed before calling out in a loud voice. “Carrie! Lia wants to pounce me and steal my virtue!”
From downstairs the pair heard a loud laugh, followed by the reply. “What virtue? Lia’s mom and I aren’t stupid, you know…”
Both girls blushed and gulped uneasily, both fighting the temptation of the implied permission of Carrie's statement. Rose quickly scampered back into the bathroom to change back into her prior outfit.

2007-10-27 B[]

Later that day, at Whateley Academy's Melville Cottage, in Pin Cushion's room:

The sole occupant is angry at how her successful recruitment of Tiffany Cobb did not give her the advantage she wanted, since her enemies' have a new ally in Raptor. That means that her enemies now outnumber her group by 1 person.

She could hire some thugs, but that never worked out well, since money could always be trumped with more money, and she knew those twin twits weren’t exactly poor. She would need to form her own clique, or team… and she needed to outnumber her enemies.

And so she leaves her room in search of ideas and people, thinking of more revenge towards Rose, for causing the loss of her brother as an advice source, while she's leaving the cottage. The timing of these thoughts, past curfew, leads to her note that:

Rumor had it that some of the nastier kids were enrolled in the overnight classes, maybe that bore looking into…

Glensheen Manor, in Duluth, MN

It's Halloween, and Lamprey is wearing the costume Rose made for her, a "goth Frankenstein-ed doll girl". Rose is in her bunny-girl outfit, and Caribou is basically in a "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" costume.

They're all taking part in a "charity ‘haunted house’ event" at the mansion, signed off by the University of Minnesota Duluth, with the couple working as candy distribution, and Caribou hosting.

Around 8PM, the candy was gone, and Rose and Lia were given the okay to leave.

And Lamprey was going to show her girlfriend a fun night out, before Caribou has to leave due to an explosion at the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, so she needs the couple to handle the guests, which they do, by getting them to calmly leave, and even helping them route paths home, bypassing the bridge.

The couple decide to cancel their plans and instead watch Caribou handle the emergency. Until there's some strange tremors felt inside the manor. Which is soon revealed to be caused by the actions of some unknown arrival.

Unfortunately for that new arrival, they were spotted by Rose, when she looked outside. On her way outside, she tips Lamprey off about some "black Kevra bodysuit[s]" to wear, while her rabbit spirit gives advice to her host, on how to detect the sneaking person.

But, that unknown arrival is detected by something specific to them and their history. Meaning, Rose has smelled them before.

It's Steven Hedgeworth Jr!

And he's spending his time, posturing and monolouging, dragging out his revenge by just floating and talking with Rose, as Lamprey arrives behind Rose and gets filled in on the history.

However, the situation stops being relatively calm, when Lamprey starts talking to Steven and therefore interfering with his plan. So, he attacks Lamprey. It goes very unfortunately for him, because he didn't know that she was a mutant, and more relevantly, she's able to surprise him into releasing her by taking big bites of him with her hand mouths.

Now that he's without a hostage, Rose is free to fight Steven, by boxing his ears, and using momentum to toss him to the ground, giving her and Lamprey time to make their escape.

When Steven discovers his target has fled, the narration notes that Steven was the one to damage the lift-bridge.

Steven uses his flight to perform an aerial search, and easily tracks down Rose, who fled the vicinity of the mansion to save the historical site from the fighting. He spots his targets on a stone bridge that he destroys, sending Rose into the water, and Lamprey hanging on by a makeshift hand-tongue rope.

Not too far away, minutes later…

Rose comes out of Tischer Creek, in Cogdon Park, injured, with the major ones being the how her right eye and arm are unusable. She makes an attempt in un-dislocating her arm, which appears to succeed well enough. When she performs a more thorough evaluation of her condition, she estimates an hour at most, for full restoration of everything except her eye, which would take days.

The best bet was to get to the Elementary school, or a nearby house. Those were close enough to the borders of the park’s property that she had a chance. If she could hide in a building, she could recover. But it tore at Rose, because [Lamprey] had been left behind. If anything happened to her, Rose would find a way to make Steven regret it.

Unbeknownst to her, Lamprey's position of hanging off a railing, gave her hope, since she got a good view of Rose's survival. Lamprey notes how that any help is very unlikely, due to the heroes that could get past Steven's Exemplar durability, all being occupied with the lift-bridge. Lamprey also prepares to sacrifice herself for Rose, as a last resort, and decides to fake unconsciousness for the moment, while also not thinking it would work, if Steven's Exemplar-ness could see through it.

However, she got lucky, and/or Steven is not as perceptive as she feared, since his narration indicates he believed the ruse, and so, Lamprey got another attack in, but unfortunately it was a sacrifice, being slammed into the "bridge support columns" and also falling into the creek below.

Steven's preoccupation with Lamprey has given Rose time enough to "[limp] from the treeline of [Congdon Park]", to the Congdon Park Elementary School, but she doesn't have enough stamina to enter the school and trigger an alarm, instead falling onto the pavement outside, and is also "in and out of consciousness".

When she finally manages sustained consciousness, she finds "a man standing in front of her, wearing work boots and denim pants", blocking her from "Steven [who] was floating several yards away, holding [Lamprey] by the arm, like a goth ragdoll".

Rose tries to get the unknown man to flee, but he does not. "Rose steadily got up", and managed to both jump and catch Lamprey when Steven threw her overhead, inadvertently turning her landing roll into a dodge roll, against a "small thrown projectile". Rose takes herself and Lamprey "back behind the mystery man", who "looked every bit a burly lumberjack".

Rose tries again to get the man to safety, warning him of the danger Steven poses, but he stays, and grows "close to fifty foot tall", and when informed of Steven's crimes, whistles to summon a similarly giant blue ox.

Lamprey wakes up and connects the man and ox as "Paul Bunyan and his blue ox".

The man and ox then tag team Steven, ending up with Steven being held in the man's giant grip, and is offered one last chance to surrender, which he does not take, deciding to break free and knock down the man instead, then monologue some more.

He's also distracted by Rose joking about the last combatant that Steven forgot, which leads to his death by giant blue ox, after which Rose falls unconscious again.

It was dark, and Rose could hear people talking around her, but it was muffled and she could not make out words.

In an unknown location, Rose is recovering from surgery on her damaged eye, with Transistor and Caribou near her. Rose is told that Lamprey is safe and recovering, before relating what happened to her.

The Paul Bunyan type being is treated as a mysterious event, before Transistor and Caribou leave Rose to her rest, which works, as she falls unconscious again.
