Hat Trick (Pat Barnes, born Patrick Dulles[1]) is a student residing in Poe as of Fall 2016.[2] , with an official 14th birthday, of 2016-07-04, along with his "faux-twin", Maidenclaw (Na'Chessa), since Na'Chessa's "new body hatched on July 4th, and Pat got transformed on that day, too!".[3][4]

Which makes him officially born on 2002-07-04, along with Na'Chessa.[3][4] Pat is a founding member of the Whateley Transgender Support Alliance.

Unlike most physically female mutants, his gender is male.[2]

See Barnes family.

The reason for his codename is because it describes the types of things his power can do:

a hat trick is when you get several difficult or improbable achievements in one go, yes?
That's sort of his MO when the power's running hot
also, it rhymes with Patrick[5].

Physical Description[]

He's "five foot five" immediately post-transformation, but might grow taller, and "he's intended to be trans-racial to an extent"[5]

a slender, slightly androgynous girl whose hair didn't really seem to be any particular color[3]
the stranger in the mirror had a permanent light tan. Straight, light brown hair had been replaced with a blend of different shades. He could pick out individual hairs as brown, blond, red, black, or white, but when seen together they formed a wavy mass of indeterminate color. The stranger's eyes were likewise a strange, variable color, shifting from hazel to green to deep blue as the angle of light changed.[1]
And that was just the beginning. Patrick felt his jaw, and the stranger in the mirror did the same, confirming that the shape of his face was definitely rounder and wider than before. Earlobes no longer dangled freely from ears which no longer stuck out like jug handles. The hands -- and these he could confirm as his own by holding them in front of his face -- the hands were slender, delicate, with longer nails, and they were the same odd tan. He looked down, and saw that his feet and toes matched.[1]

Powers[]

The power uses Empathy to scan all around him, trying to detect any in-person audience, as to make his actions match the crowd's idea of "cool", to a certain extent. For example, he can't smoothly not wince and twitch when the empathic part of that power picks up a sea change:

a peculiar sense of empathy that allowed him to assess and gauge social situations at a glance, and he'd gotten rather good at it in the past four months. The sudden shifts in mood amid the tables of the Crystal Hall were part of the background noise of life, like a drier sort of ocean waves. It was calming, most of the time, but the sudden crash of nervous hyper-awareness that spilled through the cafeteria as everyone realized the time had him wincing and twitching.[6]

Assay's read on his powers is that it scans. A lot:

Hat Trick, whew... He's doing this thing like radar. Yanno? The sweeps, the bleeps, and the creeps?"[2]
