Professor Quartermane is an adventuring Science Hero who is probably modeled on Arthur Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger (though his surname is presumably a reference to Allan Quartermain, another 19th century fictional adventurer). At least, they're both extremely dominating figures who are smugly and self-righteously sure of themselves.[1][2]
He goes around with two other heroes, Dr. Jane Dale and Jim Corbett, collectively known as the Brain Trust. He also created a team of teen-aged adventuring geniuses called the Whiz Kids.[1][2]
