Raptor: An Eye on Campus is the origin story of Raptor, by Rose Bunny. It starts on October 21, 2007, with Raptor already at Whateley, then flashes back Valentine's Day of that year to show her origin story over more than two months in Idaho, before returning to Whateley.
Summary[]
2007-10-21 A[]
Raptor watches the campus from the Laird Hall roof, seeing many things before a visitor interrupts her.
The things she sees includes:
- Lupine was walking around with a Frisbee in her mouth, wagging her tail and trying to get people to play with her. She watched as Bladedancer and Fey sparred with wooden swords over by Poe. Her curiosity was piqued when she saw Geist following Wondercute around the Quad, but not enough to actually go investigate.
Raptor, assuming that her rooftop visitor is Bubba, attempts to blackmail him, but in doing so, accidentally reveals to Elizabeth Carson, the blackmail information, that, unbeknowst to Mrs. Cantrel, he was the one who put "‘Mr. Yuk’ stickers on Puppet’s door."
Raptor then remembers her origin story, leading into the flashback.

Boise, Idaho[]
At St. Luke’s Hospital, Annalea Downs wakes up after going unconscious due to the bloodloss and shock of her mutation. She's restrained due to her thrashing while unconscious, and after Doctor Farber greets her, she's greeted by her maternal aunt Sylvia Burrows and her guide dog, Roger. Annalea is then informed that her parents abandoned her, and she released from the restraints.
Eagle, Idaho[]
Annalea is then placed into the custody of her aunt that afternoon, and discusses her feelings on her current situation.
2007-02-27[]
At her aunt's property, in Eagle, Idaho, Annalee Downs has put on a facade of happiness that her mutation has made her healthier, and is having fun with her aunt's dog, Roger. But Sylvia Burrows sees through the facade to the fear of mutation's unknowns underneath.
After Annalee reports unexpected discomfort after one of her runs around the property, to the hospital they go, where Doctor Farber runs some X-rays and reports that signs point to Annalee becoming flight-adapted, more bird-like in physical structure and reproductively, distressing Annalee, to the point where she misses Doctor Farber's elaboration.
2007-03-08[]
At her aunt's house, Annalea Downs is practicing fine manipulation using the claws her mutation gave her in-place of hands. When she expresses frustration at her mutant status and its effects, her aunt, Sylvia Burrows, a.k.a Penumbra, reveals her own mutant status.
2007-03-15[]
At the MCO Headquarters of Boise, Idaho, Raptor gets her MID after testing. She's approximated as an Exemplar-2 and an lower-level Avatar with a too-big spirit.
2007-03-29[]
Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Fennec Miller visits Sylvia Burrows and Raptor to pass along information regarding their closest living relatives, Marjorie Downs and her husband Winchester, more specifically, their sightings as part of anti-mutant events, and a supernaturally rapid loss of weight.
Although the Downs have been last seen with anti-mutant radicals, Agent Miller gives his view of the situation, that the Downs do not seem interested in harming their mutant relatives. But his information is old, and it's his partner, Agent Scolaidhe who is elsewhere, gathering data while he informs the family.
Roger, Sylvia's dog, is there too.
2007-04-02[]
At her home in Eagle, Idaho, Sylvia Burrows thinks about her and her sister's pasts, and how she met Spud Gun when hospitalized after the attack which blinded her, the day after her niece's birth. She further notes how meeting that local hero meant she now knew about Whateley Academy, since he's an alumni.
Sylvia uses her familiar link to Roger to get her niece back inside after a day experimenting with her new flight powers, and the three of them plan some training with mutant abilities for the next day.
2007-04-03[]
Eagle, Idaho[]
At her home, Sylvia Burrows, has set up a nest for her niece, Annalea Downs, suiting the changes that her golden eagle spirit has applied. After breakfast, they, along with Sylvia's familiar Roger, train with mutant powers until lunch, where Annalee reveals a new aversion to eating eggs, since she now lays eggs herself. She has a BLT instead.
After lunch, Annalee professes a fear of flying high, which her aunt names as Icarus Syndrome. "A condition that some mutants and other supers get upon developing the ability to fly. They become afraid of heights and fear that they will fall." Sylvia reassures her niece that she will manage to conquer her fears and fly high.
Washington, D.C.[]
At the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a older man is feeding the pigeons, when a younger man walks up and exchanges codephrases so the younger recieves updates on a mysterious anti-mutant cyborgification "Project: Damocles", that has 14 / 1034 survivors, where "survival" only means "they haven't died yet", and the cyborg's power source only lasts a year. There's mention of the possibility of improving the service life, with reasons against it remaining unmentioned, but the younger man watching the fed pigeons die after the older man leaves, implies using the surivors as disposable weapons.

Boise, Idaho[]
At Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park, Raptor, her aunt Sylvia Burrows, and her aunt's seeing eye dog / familiar, Roger take a day outside of Sylvia's property to get Raptor used to being around people instead of by herself. A little girl thinks Raptor's a monster at first, but is amazed once corrected at what being an Avatar is like.
Unfortunately, Raptor also meets people from her old school, the only one named being an old tormentor, Jimmy Humphries, coolest kid in school. Raptor decides to take some revenge, in showing off her new body and also listing how dangerous she could be. Along with passing along information about how his sort-of-girlfriend, Bobbi Jo Hundacker, has been unfaithful, as in fucking-half-the-freshman-football-team unfaithful.
That confrontation also brings unwanted attention, as in "two large, imposing men" of the Mutant Commission Office, with the presumably false names of "James Smith and my partner, Agent Doug Jones.”, as given later. Thankfully, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is also looking out for Sylvia and Raptor, as in Special Agents Fennec Miller, and Dinah Scolaidhe, in the first physical appearance of the latter. The meeting between organizations, and dropping the name of Washington DC FBI Deputy Director Wallace Tanner, leads to an FBI win, ensuring Sylvia and Raptor's safety.
As narrated in the next day's section, after delivering those in their custody, back home, the FBI agents pass along information about their missing relatives, "rumors of connection to a hidden Humanity First experiment, of possible human trafficking, and other illegal enterprises."
Wyoming[]
In the afternoon, at the Breezy Inn Motel, somewhere along Interstate 310, Marjorie Downs is in the bathroom, dealing with medical issues from what's implied and revealed later, as cyborgization, presumably with some nanites. When she leaves the bathroom, her husband, Winchester Downs has left her, but he returns as revealed later.

Eagle, Idaho[]
At the home of Sylvia Burrows, she and her dog familiar Roger have left on business, leaving Raptor by herself. Warned to stay on the property, she obeys the warnings, and finds a rasp to sharpen her talons, along with pracicing combat on hay bales.
When Sylvia returns, she and Raptor talk about Raptor's maternal grandparents, and how Raptor's father and said grandparents had a mutual enmity. That enmity was reflected in the grandparents' wills, which specified that Marjorie Downs, their younger daughter, would only get her inheritance if she divorced, and if she didn't, it would pass to her daughter when she is 21.
Western Montana[]
Marjorie is suffering more cybernetic augmentation pains, literally and figuratively. Part of that pain is because she only resembles a swimsuit model at a distance. A closer observer like herself would easily notice that "inhuman cyborg" is a more accurate description, what with circuitry on her limbs, and movements that make mechanical sounds, among other issues.
It turns out that her husband had talked her into the cybernetic augmentation procedure along with himself, promising they would be "better than they had ever been". She went along with it mainly since her resistance was apparently literally beaten out of her in the past.

Eagle, Idaho[]
At Sylvia's home, she, her familiar, Roger, and her niece were expecting the attack. And during the heat of battle, Raptor conquers her Icarus Syndrome, but even with planning, and an unexpected betrayal of Marjorie to her sister's side, Winchester's cybernetic upgrades are too strong, and Marjorie sacrifices herself to ensure the death of her husband.
