Smile/Amber Ashton: 2007 Freshman, in Dickinson Cottage and the roommate of Just Me. From London, Ontario, Canada, she used to live with her parents and younger brother, Gregory, until her family went on the run leaving her behind.[1]
She manifested as an Avatar, gaining a spirit that believes it's the tooth fairy, which allows her to transform into a fairy form.[1]

Amber Ashton used to live with her parents and brother in London, Ontario, where they ran Franky's Arcade and Pizzaria. Then on March 3rd, 2007, she discovered a secret room in the arcade. Inside was a torture chamber with the most recent victim moaning and whimpering on the table. Her parents came running when they heard her shrieking. When she wouldn't stop, they hit her and strapped her to the table after killing the captive in front of her.
After being left alone, a spirit connected with her, allowing her to escape in her fairy form. When police found her wandering the streets covered in blood, she was rushed to the hospital, and her parents became fugitives.
At the hospital it was discovered she had gained a phobia of adults, believing they would hurt her and sending her into an unthinking panic. Former superhero and therapist Aria King took her to a group home for mutants, taking the image of a teenager to avoid setting Amber off. She began therapy immediately, working on overcoming her phobia of adults, as well as dealing with the trauma of what she experienced by working with animals, interacting with the other teens on the farm, and daily therapy sessions with Aria, and eventually her partner Theo.
At the end of March after being rejected by her maternal grandparents, who she had believed were dead, she was left in the care of Aria King.[2]
At the end of August she arrived at Whateley alongside the other Canadian students, including Interest and High Beams.[3]
She became Just Me's roommate and seems largely happy with how things worked out. At this point her phobia seems to have ended.[1]
In November she helps form Team Unexpected with her friends.[4]

Since manifesting, Smile has gotten smaller, becoming flat chested, skinnier and shorter. She also has glittering blue hair and eyes.
When she shifts to her fairy form, her appearance changes a lot.
She put down her hair blower, and a second later Amber, who was already short and willowy to begin with, was even smaller. Where she had been standing was a foot tall, fairy-like girl, wearing a poofy pink dress, with shimmering dragonfly wings, and a long colourful wand capped by a golden star. Then she shifted back to her human form, still wet, still wearing a towel, and holding her hairbrush.
Personality[]
In spite of her parents and the severe trauma she suffered, which included a phobia of adults, cases of self harm, and possibly depression[2], by the time she reaches Whateley she seems to have largely overcome the mental trauma and appears as a happy, optimistic young lady.[1]
Why did you pick Smile as your codename?” Jane asked, keeping her eyes averted as her roommate put on her clothes.
“Because it's usually better to smile than to cry. No matter how bad things seem, if you keep moving forward trying to get better, things will eventually improve,” Amber said.
“You really believe that?”
Her roommate nodded. “Yeah, just look at me. Six months ago I was strapped down in a pool of someone elses blood thinking my parents were going to murder me, and now here I am with a funny spirit, alive and healthy, ready to face the world.”[1]
Despite her attitude, she still gets sad when reminded of something from her past, such as the fun Halloween parties held at her parents arcade. And she can be frightened by things that remind her of her parents.
Her friend was about to ask something else, then stopped, her mouth open. “Jane...” Amber whispered, “are you OK?”
“I'm fine. Just angry.”
Amber's face had gone pasty white. “You l-look like my parents did, the last time I saw them.”
Aella put her hand on Amber's shoulder, pulling the unresisting tiny girl back a little while moving in front of her. “You look like you're about to kill someone.”[5]
She is also sensitive about her lack of a chest.

Effectively a baseline in her usual form, she can shift into a fairy form. In this form she is a foot tall, with dragonfly wings allowing her to fly, and always has on a poofy dress. She has a wand with a star on the tip, and can shoot a beam that acts like Novocain, causing extreme numbness.[1] She has also used her wand to break the lock of a metal door and create a hole in the roof of a barn.[2]
“OK, fish scale tail, that can be walked in, seashell bikini with extra padding, long red hair. Easy enough.”
Scowling, Amber turned into her tiny fairy form and pointed her wand at Shaun's face. A moment later his jaw was hanging open.
“Wha' 'id I 'o?” he asked, slapping his numbed jaw.
Turning back to her human form, Amber glared at him. “Didn't your mom ever tell you not to make rude comments about a girls figure?”[1]
