Yes, there is Whateley Academy fiction created outside of the scope of the canon, and no, the canon group does not have a problem with it. In fact, many of them wrote non-canon fiction before being invited to join, and some even have, once in a while, posted a story which they really wanted to write but which didn't fit the canon plans.
The term "fanfiction", however, is disliked by the canon authors, because of the general perception that fanfics are of lower quality than "official" material. In order to acknowledge that many of such non-canon stories are of a high quality, and the only reason that they can't be made canon is because they don't fit the long-term plans for the universe, a new name was chosen -- Whateley Independent Fiction, or WhatIF for short. (Just don't tell Ayla, because he might consider it an infringement on his trademarks.)
However, this wiki is focused on the canon stories, and therefore WhatIFs will rarely be mentioned here.
But we will tell you some of the places you can find it.

- There is a separate section for those stories that the canon authors consider of particularly high quality: Featured WhatIF
- Furthermore, there's also an entire subforum dedicated to the writing of fiction: The Tunnels. Some authors may choose to post their stories there.
Outside of the official site, WhatIFs can be found elsewhere on the Internet:
- Archival, from the very early days of Whateley Academy.
